BOSSOMS HISTORY According to the earliest official records, a Boatyard has been in existence on this site beside the River Thames since 1834. The Bossoms family owned it until 1945 when the last in a line of generations retired from this family business.
Bossoms reputation as high standard boat builders began to develop with their wooden dinghies; and are one of the few Boat builders still in existence that exhibited at the first ever London Boat Show at Olympia. From the beginning, the company became forerunners in the use of GRP, their most famous craft being their 'Bosun', one of the first 14 foot GRP sailing dinghies produced, and still being ordered by the M.O.D (Ministry of Defence). Over the years the variety of craft developed here, and has ranged from small pedal boats to 35 foot launches. Having always been versatile a change of emphasis was thrust upon them in 1982 during the Falklands conflict. This necessitated round the clock production of Raydomes to protect radar equipment on Harrier Jump Jets. Presently Bossoms produce a range of pedal craft, fun boats, and for the M.O.D. sail Training craft and motor whalers, also launches for the N.R.A. Their high standards of craftsmanship in wood is maintained and seen at its best in the internal layout of the famous 26 foot ocean going sloop 'Vertue II'. and excellent range of launches. |
