BOSUN 14' SAILING DINGHY MK II

The 14-foot Bosun Sailing Dinghy was designed by Bossoms Boatyard Ltd in 1963 to conform to the stringent requirements of the Royal Navy at that time. The statement of requirements called for a racing dinghy to keep the expert helmsman interested and enable beginners to learn the basic fundamentals of sailing. The design is a safe fast dinghy suitable for up to 3 or 4 crew to handle in open seas with a minimum of maintenance and the ability for repairs to be carried out without specialist knowledge and it is still going after 40 years.

The Bosun is a very safe dinghy ideal for cruising, family tuition or hire. All outside edges including the transom boundary are protected by wood, which is easily replaceable and brass strips further protect the keel. Particular attention has been paid to the wooden trim, an example of which is the bulb section bilge keels providing effective hand holds in the event of capsize. The transom is suitably strengthened to take outboard motors and the handholds for carrying are situated at strategic points along the gunwhales for easy movement of the craft.

Construction of the Bosun MK II
The hull is constructed of a through coloured polyester resin in two mouldings, which are glassed reinforcement of woven rovings and matt. It has a non-slip cockpit floor, mahogany transom boundary, stem, keel, gunwhales, thwarts and bilge keels. The centreplate casing is an integral moulding with the hull, the centreplate being made of 6mm hot-dipped, galvanised mild steel with softened edges. The new rudder is made from an 18 ply anti-fracture construction all fittings are in stainless steel including stem, rudder fittings, mainsheet horse etc.

Centreplate and jib sheet cam cleats are now of a high grade carbon fibre construction, supermax self-bailers are installed either side of the centrebox, spinnaker storage and sheets tuning blocks have all been re-thought to improve sailability. All shock cords constructed using the modern aluminium ferrule looping covered by white plastic improving durability. A new boom fully modernised with an internal outhaul, new mast adapted with internal jib halyards and spreaders, all sails, overboom cover completing modernisation of the craft.

All the changes have kept the craft within the Class Association rules but have improved the performance and usability.
